How to Make a Traditional Texas Pecan Pie

Texas pecan pie is one of the most famous traditional Southern desserts.  Texas pecan pie can be found at weddings, holiday tables, birthdays, anniversaries, and backyard BBQ celebrations.  Whenever there is a party going on in the South, or in a family that has Southern roots, there will be at least one traditional Texas pecan pie or cake. If you're trying to make your own traditional Texas pecan pie at home here are some tips from Southern food experts that will help you create the perfect traditional Texas pecan pie:

Use maple syrup instead of corn syrup - Many recipes for traditional Texas pecan pie call for dark corn syrup as one of the ingredients used to bind the Texas pecan pie filling. Instead of using corn syrup use maple syrup. The maple flavor will offset the Texas pecans perfectly and the resulting pie will be delicious.

Don't forget the spices - It' s important to use traditional Southern spice blends to spice the pie like cloves and cinnamon. A Texas pecan pie just won't taste the time without the cloves, cinnamon and other spices that have been used in Texas pecan pie for generations.

Use whole, fresh ingredients - A baked good is only as good as the ingredients it's made from. Southern food is all about fresh, whole foods that are well cooked.  Use fresh eggs, fresh milk, unbleached flour, real butter and other whole ingredients to make your traditional Texas pecan pie taste the best it can possibly taste. There is a noticeable difference in the taste when you substitute lesser ingredients, like substituting margarine for real butter.

Only use real Texas pecans - A Texas pecan pie is just not the same without authentic Texas pecans.  In order to get a true Southern taste you have to use real Texas pecans in the pie. If you can't find real Texas pecans locally order them. You'll be glad you took the time to get real Texas pecans when you taste the final product .

Liven up the crust with ground pecans - When you're mixing up the graham cracker crust for the pie grind up some Texas pecans until they are very fine and toss them in with the graham crackers.  A Texas pecan pie should always have a light layer of ground pecans in the crust as well as having Texas pecans in the pie so that there are pecans in every bit of the pie.
