Five Classic Hollywood Movies Changed by Fruitcake

There’s something about the holiday season that always makes curling up in front of a classic movie seem so much more appealing, even romantic. Maybe it’s that DVD’s make great gifts, or that a good movie helps fill the hours after the presents are open and the sleepy-making holiday dinner is complete and finished. Fruitcakes and Texas pecan fruitcakes go great with movie and TV watching. They’re also good with coffee, making the combination of the three a delightfully relaxing treat after shopping or a long day on the go.

The following list combines one of our favorite subjects – fruitcake! – with five classic movies of yesteryear, explaining how the healthy and delightful fruitcake could have made each story better - or at least a little happier.

1. Gone With the Fruitcake – As Atlanta burns and the rigors of Reconstruction begin to take their toll, Scarlett O’Hara is able to draw just enough resources together to make a fruitcake. Sitting down to eat, she exclaims, “As God as my witness, with this fruitcake I’ll never go hungry again!”

2. The Maltese Fruitcake – Hardboiled private detective Sam Spade competes with a ruthless smuggler to find the exotic fruitcake said to be worth more than its weight in gold. Shaped like a falcon, the fruitcake is later discovered to be made not of gold but of fresh fruits and nuts.

3. The Way We Were With Fruitcake – A man and a woman look back on their lives, reminiscing about the early days of their romance and their shared love of fresh fruitcake made from only the best ingredients. Later, they are reunited outside a bakery that sells fruitcake, and agree to have one more meal together, with fruitcake as dessert.

4. It’s A Wonderful Fruitcake – The owner of a small-town fruitcake bakery regrets his decision to follow his father’s wishes. On Christmas Eve, he’s visited by an angel who lets him see how the whole town’s life would have been different if not for the nourishment and joy provided by their holiday fruitcakes.

5. Citizen Kake – The rise and fall of fruitcake magnate Charles Foster “Fruit” Kake, who once seemed destined to be president until a shocking love affair ruined his public image. After his death, an investigator searches for the meaning of his last words – “rose buds” – finding in time that rosebuds were the secret flavorings in his bakery’s products.
